Chapter 6: Plink

The accommodations Sable set aside for them seemed to stretch across an entire wing of the palace. The series of airy chambers were linked together by sets of doorways, which could be thrown open to give the feeling of a single, enormous room.

The furnishings were as fine as the chambers, if a bit austere for Plink’s tastes. Everything seemed to be cast in shades of opal and blue, with silver inlay and scrollwork carved into soft white birch and ash. Drapes the color of a frozen lake were pinned back at the windows, allowing the honey-colored light of late afternoon to cascade through the glassy ice.

“Not bad, not bad at all,” Blakely said, dragging a finger across the top of a mantle like a persnickety chatelaine performing an inspection. Evidently satisfied with the level of dust, the blonde noblewoman unbuckled her belt and let her sword fall to the carpeted floor. She collapsed backwards with a happy sigh onto a nearby four-poster bed.

“Ahhh,” she breathed out in ecstasy, “airships are wonderful and everything, but holy shit did I miss silk sheets.”

Plink stifled a snort of laughter. Blakely seemed to be taking the castle in stride, treating the ostentatious displays of faerie wealth with a casual indifference only the noble-born could pull off.

Samantha was another story entirely. She stood in the middle of the drawing room, looking up at the decorative medallion of chased silver ringing the chandelier’s anchor. She squinted at it so fiercely, a casual observer would’ve been forgiven in thinking that the object had insulted her family, or perhaps taken a piss in her hair.

Plink zipped over to her.

“How much do you think that’s worth?” Samantha jerked her chin upwards, not shifting her focus from the silver disk in the ceiling.

“It’s a little high for you to reach, and too heavy for me to lift. Remember, I can’t fly in my human form.”

“Hm.” The half-satyr’s scowl deepened. “I think we should’ve asked the queen for more money.”

Plink grinned. “You can fill your pockets tomorrow with candlesticks and cutlery from the dining table.”

“Maybe I will.”

Plink chuckled, then flitted over to a low table where her bottle of growing potion had been set out. A measure had even been poured conveniently into a dish by some servant. She stepped out of her dress, and, now naked, took a palmful of potion. In seconds, she was human-sized. She stretched both her arms and her pretty, but now-useless wings, wiggling her toes into the thick carpet and giving a happy shimmy of her butt. Sometimes, it just felt so good to be big.

“I’m starving,” Blakely said from the bed, propping up on her elbows and pursing her lips.

“Pout all you want,” Plink replied, pulling a fluffy bathrobe over her sumptuous nudity, “Isadora said she’d be back with food soon.”

The women shared a moment of comfortable silence, filled only by the grunted sounds of effort coming in through the open balcony doors.

“Don’t tire yourself out, babe,” Samantha called out. “You’re going to need your strength.
